Public Lands News Update – Roadless Rule and Big Bend

Here’s an overview of the most significant public lands developments from the past few weeks. The biggest national story continues to be the proposed full repeal of the 2001 Roadless Rule, while activity at Big Bend National Park remains on pause.

Roadless Rule Repeal Proposal Advances

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and Forest Service have formally proposed rescinding the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule in its entirety. The rule currently protects approximately 45 million acres of National Forest land from most new road construction and timber harvesting.

A Draft Environmental Impact Statement was released in mid-August. The public comment period is open until September 21, 2026. Conservation groups have requested an extension of the comment period, citing the scale of the proposal.

Supporters of the repeal argue it will give local forest managers more flexibility for wildfire mitigation, forest health treatments, and economic activity. Opponents express concern about potential impacts on wildlife habitat, water quality, and remote recreational experiences.

Big Bend National Park Border Infrastructure Update

Construction and survey work related to border security infrastructure inside Big Bend National Park remains paused. A federal judge extended the temporary halt until mid-September 2026. CBP has stated it does not plan to build a traditional 30-foot wall inside the park, focusing instead on vehicle barriers, patrol roads, and detection technology in limited areas.

The Bureau of Land Management continues advancing updates to grazing regulations that would expand livestock numbers on public rangelands while streamlining public participation processes.
BLM has opened public scoping periods for upcoming oil and gas lease sales in Nevada and Montana/Dakotas.
