Big Bend Border Infrastructure Update
As of mid-August 2026, developments around border infrastructure in and near Big Bend National Park continue to evolve.
Current Status of Border Infrastructure in Big Bend
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has repeatedly stated that it is not constructing a 30-foot steel border wall inside Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, or the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area.
Instead, current plans for the national park area focus on:
- Limited vehicle barriers (approximately 4–6 feet tall)
- New and improved patrol roads
- Detection technology (cameras, sensors, and related infrastructure)
In early August, survey and design work involving heavy equipment began in parts of the park. On August 17, CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott announced a temporary pause on all construction activity inside Big Bend National Park while he conducts an on-the-ground evaluation and meets with local stakeholders and law enforcement.
Outside the national park, construction of traditional 30-foot border wall segments is moving forward in the broader Big Bend region (Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, and Presidio counties), with early work already underway.
